"In the case of LGMC, the

  overall program is much

stronger than the sum of its

  parts.  I know that networking

is not at all the focus of the

  program, but it is 'latently

  prominent'.  In my opinion,

  community awareness has

  definitely been the overriding

  benefit of the class, but

creating a web or community of

  associates with a common

interest has given me more ...

  friendship and more

  confidence.  Thank you all for

  the overall program that you

  keep strong."

Orientation & Retreat

The Orientation marks the first meeting of each new class.  Generally scheduled the first or second Thursday in September, it is a time to begin the important first step of relationship building and experiencing the diversity of the class.  Participant Sponsors and or immediate Supervisors are encouraged to attend so they can also understand the time commitments of the program.  This late afternoon (4:00 PM) start concludes with a social time with our Board of Trustees.

The two-day retreat generally occurs two weeks after the Orientation session in September.  It begins on a Friday and concludes on Saturday afternoon.  This session is viewed as one of the critical elements of the program and therefore full attendance by all participants is expected.

The Retreat will focus on a continuation of team and relationship building, personal leadership and temperament awareness, community leadership skill building personal goal setting.  Held at an area Retreat Center, it is a time to center yourself for the things to come.

PROGRAM DAYS

Starting in October, there are four program days in the schedule.  These days begin the once a month meeting schedule for the class.  Each program day is scheduled for the entire day beginning with a continental breakfast.  Each day concludes at 4:30 PM.  Lunch is also provided on each meeting day.

The focus for each Program Day may vary from year to year depending on major community issues, but they usually focus on Healthcare, Education, Government, Law & Justice, and other issues of this nature.  These days are planned and facilitated by the LGMC Staff with assistance from community leaders and alumni.  It is suggested that cell phones, pagers etc. be checked at the door at the beginning of each meeting.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Projects are solicited from various Agencies and Organizations throughout the county. These projects are given to the class and they decide which of them will make the list of those to be considered.  Each participant is asked to become part of the Project Team.  These projects may be completed by the end of the class year (June) or they may go on passed this date to their conclusion.  Projects are an important part of the program because they provide “real live examples” requiring leadership.

GRADUATION

The Graduation Ceremony is scheduled for the first Thursday in June. We encourage our class members to invite family, friends and business associates to a beautiful dinner and short ceremony.  Pictures from each Program Day, Challenge Day as well as Orientation and Retreat are displayed for graduates to show to everyone.  A guest speaker talks about their experience as a leader in the community as well as words from a fellow class member round out the evenings affairs.

It is a time to celebrate each participant for their commitment over the nine months of the program and to encourage them along their Community Leadership journey. Due to the impact on various individual and team aspects of the program we adhere to a very strict attendance policy allowing candidates one emergency absence during the program year.

This year's graduation was held at the Bull Valley Country Club, with our Keynote Speaker being David Hubbard, a member of our Board of Trustees, and an individual who is extremely involved in his community.  David is a lifelong resident of Crystal Lake. serves as the President of the Board of School District 47, an Ambassador for the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, as well as many other associations.
